The idea of planning your first heating oil delivery might leave you a tad confused. What is it that you need to consider when ordering heating oil for the first time, and how can you prepare for your top-up?

Slightly different to Gas or Electricity, Heating Oil is off-grid. This essentially means that you won’t have an unlimited supply, and you will be required to arrange a delivery in order to keep your tank levels high and your home warm.

Don’t panic if this is all new to you, we’re can talk you through the process - step-by-step!

Look at The Label On Your Boiler

The first thing you have to do is know what heating oil you need to order. The label on your boiler will inform you what heating oil your system takes. It will likely be Heating Oil/Kerosene, Premium Heating Oil, or Red Diesel, which is not likely but still plausible for older systems.

What Size Tank Have You got?

You must be able to find out the capacity and size of your heating oil tank by looking at the product label, often located on the front or side of the tank. The label will be found on all modern oil tanks, and it states the approximate capacity of the tank.

This will let you know how much heating oil your tank can hold.

Monitor the Oil Levels

To find out how much heating oil you require, you will need to know how much heating oil is in your tank currently. A general estimate will work, as your fuel supplier will just stop when your tank reaches its full capacity.

You may have a gauge or monitor in your home that actually displays your oil levels, this will make this even simpler to carry out.

If you don’t have a gauge or monitor, you can actually do a dipstick test. Just lower a dipstick into your tank and check where the fuel line stops.

It’s essential to keep an eye on your tank levels to avoid running out. Running out of fuel may cause issues with your oil system. A general rule of thumb is to try to keep your tank one-quarter full to prevent clogged filters or lines.
