Whether you live in a remote area where traditional gas is not readily available, prefer to live off-the-grid or are simply looking for a cost-effective alternative to central heating, heating oil is an excellent solution for heating your home that offers a number of advantages.
If this is a route you’re considering taking, then you’re likely to have a number of questions, such as how the delivery of said oil works. We’re here to explain just that, offering insight into what you can expect from the process of having your heating oil delivered.
Home heating oil, or oil heating, refers to an independent heating system within your home whereby oil is used as the primary source of fuel to meet your heating needs. An oil-fuelled boiler or furnace will be installed at your home, which is then used to burn the oil in order to generate heat that is then circulated throughout your home through a network of pipes, radiators and/or underfloor heating systems exactly the same as how heat is distributed when using traditional boilers.
This is a much more independent way of heating your home, as you simply pay for your heating oil, which is then stored at your property - at your disposal whenever it’s required. It’s kept in a storage tank that is installed at your property, which is connected to the oil boiler/furnace, allowing the oil to be fed into this to be ignited and burned.
Of course, because the oil is stored at your property, it must first be delivered, which we’ll go on to discuss next.
It’s your responsibility to schedule the delivery of your heating oil for whenever your tank requires a top-up. This can usually be done by getting in touch with your heating oil supplier, who will give you a quote for the delivery and will agree upon a scheduled date for the delivery that suits you and gives them reasonable time to reach your property.
Heating oil is typically delivered using a large tanker, so it’s important that you prepare for its arrival on your delivery date. This involves ensuring you keep a clear pathway for the truck so that it can easily access your storage tank. For example, you may need to temporarily move some vehicles out of the way and keep any pets locked indoors to prevent any accidents from occurring when the tanker truck arrives.
Upon arrival, the driver will position the delivery truck as close to your oil tank as possible, then will connect a long hose to your tank, through which your new oil supply will be pumped. The oil level will be monitored and the amount of oil delivered recorded, then the hose will be disconnected, the cap to your tank replaced and the delivery will be complete!
