Whether you’re new to the industry or have been part of it for a while, legislation surrounding fuels can change frequently. That's why it is always best to refresh your memory and find out more about some fuels which are not to be used in certain circumstances. One of the biggest of these that many slip up with is red diesel.

Read on to find out more about red diesel and how you can use it in 2023.

What Is Red Diesel?

Red diesel is a mineral diesel that gets its name from the colour dye that is added to it. Several chemical markers and a dye are added to the fuel before it is sold, which will give it a deep crimson colour that is easily identifiable when compared to other fuels.

This dye is used to mark that it has a lower duty rate and is taxed lower than the standard fuel. It can also be used as an easy way to check if red diesel is being misused. The red colour will remain in the engine for quite a while, so even if you haven’t got any red diesel in the engine currently, it can still be found.

Using red diesel when you are not meant to be is classed as tax evasion and has a number of consequences. The vehicle can be scribed and you may have to pay the fuel duty you have skipped out to. You might also have to pay a fee and in the most serious questions, can go to prison.

Can I Use Red Diesel?

In April 2022, gas oil duty changed, which meant that the rules on the tax relief of gas oil were changed, removing the eligibility to use red diesel by many businesses. This is due to the government’s commitment to reducing all emissions by 2050. The only sectors that can use red diesel after the April 2022 changes are:

 ●     Forestry

●     Horticulture

●     Agriculture

●     Public sector

●     Rail

●     Amateur sports clubs, golf courses and fish farming

●     Travelling fairgrounds
