How to Maintain Your Agricultural Machinery

If you work on a farm then you’ll know how crucial machinery is to keep operations running smoothly. Farms rely on a variety of agricultural machinery to function, including tractors, combine harvesters, sprayers, balers and mowers. A breakdown or malfunction can cause significant issues and delays, especially during harvest time, so proper machinery maintenance is essential.

Maintaining your agricultural machinery will ensure it lasts longer and reduce the chances of breakdowns or costly repairs, so read on to find out more.

Monitor your fuel levels

It might sound obvious but staying on top of your fuel levels is essential to keep machinery in good working order. Don’t wait until the last minute and risk a machinery breakdown during peak times; monitor fuel levels and arrange a regular delivery schedule. Most fuel delivery companies offer next day delivery (or same day in emergencies) but arrange regular delivery slots in advance to avoid last minute panic.

Maintain hydraulic systems

Agricultural hydraulic systems come under a lot of pressure, especially during peak season. Inspect hydraulic systems after every use (or at least once a week) for signs of leaks, kinks in the pipes, restriction in joint movement or general wear and tear. You’ll also need to keep an eye on hydraulic fluid levels and ensure that you’re using the right, high quality fluid.

Change your oil

Oils like agricultural lubricants protect your machinery from dirt, dust and debris that might cause damage. Oils don’t lose their lubrication properties over time, but they can become clogged with build-ups of dirt so they’ll need to be replaced frequently. Lubricants also help to minimise carbon emissions and maximise your machinery’s effectiveness, especially in peak season.

Clean the air filters

Engines need a steady stream of clean air to function efficiently but build ups of dust, dirt and debris can quickly clog your air filters. Check filters regularly and clean them out if necessary; simply tapping out any soil or debris is often enough. If your filter is particularly blocked, an air compressor is highly effective at blowing away any build up.
