With the current state of the world, many people in the agricultural industry, as well as others, are starting to stockpile. It’s important to have enough food for your family, but what about fuel? How long can you run your vehicles on what you have?
As fuel prices rise, more and more people are trying to buy a little extra keep on hand. In the agriculture business, it’s essential to have red diesel, but even that is getting pricier by the day. So just how long can you keep red diesel if you buy extra right now?
As with all fuels, red diesel will not last forever. It doesn’t hold up to being left standing for long periods of time, so you’ll need to plan accordingly.
Most red diesel has a duration of just six months. In some cases, it may be good up to 12 months after purchase, but this is rare and it would need to be in use throughout that time. You can also move it around to ensure it is not merely standing the entire time, but there are additives that can also prolong the lifespan of the fuel.
An additive will prevent bacteria from growing and blocking filters, as well as reduce the chance of the fuel corroding your tank if it is left in the tank throughout that period of time. It can also prevent sludge from forming in the fuel, which can cause issues in the engine.
Need to make your red diesel go further? There are some ways to do that. First, you should continue to use your stored fuel, with new fuel going into storage. For example, you would use the diesel that is five months old while filling the containers with brand new red diesel. This prevents any fuel from sitting too long.
Keep your machinery and vehicles well maintained, to prevent the excessive usage of the fuel, as well. The tyres should be fully inflated and the engine tuned.
