As far back as 2,000 years ago, civilisations in China were already using the power of oil and natural gas as heating oil for the home. Remarkably, the Chinese knew the power and properties of gas and oil this long ago and even crafted pipes made from bamboo as a way to channel the gas into their home. Once in the home, the gas from the heating oil below the ground was used as a light and heat source.

Oil refining methods were not developed and innovated until much later, however, crude oil was used by several ancient civilisations in many different capacities. For example, the Ancient Egyptians used oil as a bonding agent to construct buildings, roads and even the pyramids! Elsewhere in Mesoamerica, Native Americans used oil as a cure-all ointment and countless civilisations used oil to bond and waterproof ships during the shipbuilding process.

Although kerosene wasn’t developed and used for many years after the height of the ancient civilisations, the use of crude oil and China’s innovative channelling of natural gas shows that ancient civilisations were much more attuned to the natural resources of the world than we may give them credit for,
